Migraine? Try a Smartphone Relaxation App

If you suffer from migraines frequently, this could reduce your symptoms.

According to the American Migraine Association, 1 in 4 households in the country is home to someone who suffers from migraines. This includes 1 in 5 women, 1 in 16 men and 1 in 11 children. It all adds up to a lot of pain and billions of hours lost to severe headaches each year, culminating in reduced productivity at work, increased family stress and reduced social engagement. Bad news.

The good part is that new treatments for migraines are always on the horizon. Botox is one, (surprisingly) and so is using relaxation apps on your smartphone. An app might not sound like a powerful tool when it comes to debilitating head pain, but get this.

A study done at NYU School of Medicine discovered that migraine sufferers can benefit from them.

Those who get a lot of attacks regularly experienced a reduction in symptoms when they used a smartphone-based relaxation technique at least twice a week, called RELAXaHEAD.

On average, frequent sufferers had four fewer headache days per month, the study found, when using the app. (Of note, the study wasn’t impartial, however, as the NYU Langone holds a financial interest in the company that made the app. Still, the results of the study were promising. If you’re currently suffering from frequent migraines, you may feel that any new techniques made to reduce your symptoms are worth trying).

The app isn’t yet available to the public. Presumably it will be, soon. Keep a look out on through regular application platforms, in the near future.
